Mile Marker 2: The First Sentence

Sometimes courage doesn’t come before we take a step. Sometimes it comes after we’ve taken it.

I remember struggling with the thought of preaching while I was a student at Radford University. I believed God was calling me to speak, but believing I should do something and finding the courage to do it were two different things.

I had prepared what I wanted to say. But when the moment came, I still had to open my mouth. So I began with one sentence, something I had already planned to say. Once I said it, I found myself able to continue. The words came, and I kept speaking.

Looking back, I think there’s a lesson in that small moment. We sometimes wait for God to give us enough confidence to see the whole road ahead. We want to know what will happen, whether we’ll succeed, and whether we’re strong enough for what He’s asking.

But perhaps faith doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes God gives us enough grace for the first sentence, the first conversation, or the first uncertain step. What comes afterward is something we discover along the way.

I didn’t need to know everything I would say that day. I only needed to begin.

Sometimes the courage we’re praying for is waiting on the other side of our first step.
